Haruko Obokata Could Face Punishment At Riken

Haruko Obokata

Japan's Riken research institute set up a committee Thursday to consider disciplinary action over controversial stem cell articles.

Possible targets include Haruko Obokata, the embattled lead author of the articles published in the British science journal Nature in January.

Those responsible will be "strictly punished" based on deliberations at the disciplinary committee, Minoru Yonekura, a Riken board member in charge of compliance matters, told a press conference.

The deliberations will last for about a month, Yonekura said. Riken's internal rules indicate that Obokata can be dismissed.

Riken rejected a plea by Obokata challenging its April findings that she committed image fabrication and manipulation in the articles about stimulus-triggered acquisition of pluripotency cells.
